Translations into Malay/Indonesian and Afrikaans

None of my translations into Malay/Indonesian and Afrikaans (posted more than a month ago) have been evaluated or commentated on so far. Have I done anything wrong ?

The "problem", if we can dub it so, it that there is no one to evaluate translations done into Malay/Indonesian and Afrikaans.

If you have enough spare time to evaluate translations, I can propose your name to the community as a candidate for expert for those languages. What do you think?

I'm Ok with this, a motivated expert even if s/he's not native speaker is better than no expert at all.

Yes, I agree too. And yes, gbersndorff, you'll probably have to evaluate your own translations, but I think every expert or nearly has been evaluating her/his own translations at the beginning, especially the languages for which we have only one expert; but JP would tell you; this can be hazardous in a way, as if the expert hasn't got the skills we supposed s/he had before s/he was promoted expert, someone logging in soon or later will notify, for example, the interface was badly translated and/or some translations are full of mistakes.
(as it once happened when porfyhr notified the Swedish interface was actually very badly translated, he even notified the page one could read after having clicked on "log out" was displaying a message that told : "you aren't looged in anymore, you idiot". )

What I would ask you, gbersdorff, is which one of these three languages you think you master the best, as being an expert in one language is already a nice piece of work.

I personaly think you're someone trustable, and I would be glad if you joined our experts team.

Let me tell you first that Malay and Indonesian are one and the same language.
The differences are similar to those between British and American English.
This being said I don’t feel I am qualified to be an expert on cucumis.com.
For one thing, I am travelling 4 to 5 months a year, and my internet access is often limited at best. (I am in South Africa at present and I have had no internet access for the past 4 days, I won’t have any for a week starting next Sunday). This means that at times one would have to wait several days or even weeks for my evaluation.
As to my level, I am fluent for everyday conversation in both Afrikaans and Indonesian Malay, which is not saying that I don’t make mistakes. Unfortunately I do. For Indonesian I have two limitations. I have little knowledge of the highly specific vocabulary (Arabic loan words) of Mohammedan ethical and religious texts. And I am not conversant with the dialect of Jakarta which is used as a kind of argot by the younger generation throughout the country. Don’t ask me to translate your sms message! As for Afrikaans, I won’t be able to translate so-called Fly-taal or Flaai-taal, a creolized form of the language spoken in the townships of the Transvaal. It uses far to many Bantu words for a speaker of Standard Afrikaans to be able to understand it. (Just think of Surinamese *pidgin* English or Creole from Martinique or Guadeloupe.)
As long as cucumis has no native speakers of Malay or Afrikaans I am quite willing to advise on a case-to-case basis. I am unlikely to make the kind of mistake that you mentioned for the Swedish interface. I never post translations of which I haven’t at least understood the source text. If I have any doubts I always point them out. Inevitably that means that I would have to return a number of requests or post only a partial evaluation.
