Hello Ian!

This year I'm working on a thesis (a "final essay" ) about the Butterfly Effect, a hypothesis stating that a tiny difference in the beginning can cause a major difference towards the end.
(The most common example is Lorenz' butterfly, that could produce a tornado on the other side of the world just by flapping its wings)
Well, just some background info, don't know if you've already heard of it

Anyway, while surfing a bit on the internet looking for information, I found an article about a Japanese scientists who fully concentrated on the butterfly effect. He once did a test, during a soccer match, he dropped a stone to see if it would change the outcome. The losing team said they'd been treated unfair, and went to court. The judge said they were right, and so they "won" the match 5-0. I thought this was a nice story to include in my thesis (in the end, the outcome had a major difference after all!), but for some reason I can no longer find this article. I found it on a random school computer, so the internet history is gone...

I must have tried hundreds of search combinations, and after hours of searching I'm a bit desperate...
I was wondering, could you please see if you could find something in Japanese about this scientist (name is enough)?

Thanks a lot!

To be honest I thought this could have actually happened in Japan but I don't know anything at all about the Japanese culture, so I'm happy you gave me your opinion.

Actually I wouldn't mind if it would be an urban legend. All I know is that I read it somewhere on the internet two or three months ago, and that I can no longer seem to find it... If the story was made up, that would explain why!

Still... even urban legends have some sort of "truth" in them. Do you mind checking japanese scientist chaos theory and
japanese scientist butterfly effect?

Sorry for all the trouble, but it's quite important to me.

Bonjour Ian!

Merci!

Hi Ian,

I thought I'd send you a message since you are also a Canadian living in a far-off land. You know an unusual set of languages, it must have been incredibly difficult learning Japanese coming from an English background, when I look at Chinese or Japanese text it's just all a blank to me. I'm going to be on-line a lot today because I had a little run in with a car two days ago while riding a bicycle.

Cheers, Jens

Hello Ian,

I just came back from the library and of course I almost collided again. Yes, it will take me a while before I can write Finnish of a good standard, but many Finns can't even write very well. My English has deteriorated (it's getting better again though) living in Finland, and the only writing that I do in English is here at Cucumis.

Hey
I'm sorry to ask you for a translation here because the cucumis rules say you shouldn't, but one of the users recommended me to do so.
I already discribed my problem in the forum (at a completely wrong place, but still, i couldn't find any better) : I got a t-shirt with an asian sign, which is, in my opinion, japanese.
http://dacollo.oxois.org/stuff/1.jpg
http://dacollo.oxois.org/stuff/2.png

The first link is the original photograph, but i think the small line, which is missing in the second image was a mistake by the person who painted it, but i may be wrong.

Could you tell me the meaning or, if it is not japanese, give me a hint?

I already said in the forum: my main problem is, that i'm not able to type Japanese, and that is why i haven't already punched the signs through all available online-translation-tools.

Thanks for your time (even if the time only consists of reading this message and deleting it
Yours Sincerely, David
