Giving translation points to regular membersImprovement
Results 1 - 7 of about 7 | | | 27 November 2006 16:15 | | One of the most unfair feature of cucumis is that if you don't speak a foreign language you can't use it (as it's told on the home page).
But I've noticed something : most of the translators don't use their points to ask for translations. They do it because they like it. Translating is like a game, it's sometime very addictive ![](../images/emo/smile.png) .
As you may know or not, when a new member register with cucumis, he has 0 point, but he can ask for up to a 500 points translation, and having a negative number of points ( -500 points).
If the user can't speak a foreign language, his number of points will stay negative and he will never be able to submit a new translation request.
Now I suggest to give him 500 points after a delay of 7 days, only if his number of point is still negative and only if he visits again cucumis.org
Maybe the members who translate a lot of texts might find it unfair, so please tell it here.
My opinion is that a person who logs in regularly on cucumis, every week, to submit a new translation, is certainly a person very motivated to get some texts transalted and deserves to be helped by the community.
If there are no messages i this topic I'll consider that you are all agree (or maybe I'll post it in a news article, to be sure everybody has read it). | | 29 November 2006 06:01 | | Altough I'm a very new member and haven't yet explored all the details of this website, I can agree with it, for sure. | | 30 November 2006 03:45 | ![](../avatars/13175.img) iriniNumber of messages: 849 | Sure thing! I only need a few points any way and that's for asking for translations in English and French when someone wants a translation from a lanuguage I don't know.
But the thing is, my memory is not ALL that good. How am I supposed to know which members visit sort of regurarly and need points? It's not as if I can see a whole list or anything so I need someone to point me to the right direction (a sort of "why don't you give points to X?" ![](../images/emo/grin.png) | | 30 November 2006 06:54 | | Good
Irini, it is automatic and it's not your points. The system will autilatically detect regular visitors and give them points. The system is already in test, with 500 points every 10 days. Let's see how it goes... | | 1 December 2006 10:01 | | Well, I'm also new on this site but perhaps I can also say something...
I think that giving the ponts to those who do not translate something it's really sort of unfair. It also resembles to encouragement of laziness and parasitism, especially for those who REGULARY uses the work of others. One thing is to help for several times to people who really need that - it's good, nobody will object this, I think. Eventually, each sometime needs urgent help... But do it regulary???
May be it would be more convenient to create new chapter at site, where those who do not know the languages will be allowed to place their texts with the request to translate. Those translators who interested some way in doing that will visit this page and translate, getting appropriate points from administration (the number of point could depend from number of words, for example, or from the languages of translation - anyway, it can be done automatically). But the state of things when some have to get points by working and others get them for gratis - I think it's a wrong path, which may destroy all the idea of this perfect site.
