Chinese gods
Translation
English

Translated by samanthalee
Target language: English

Chinese gods are far above mortals, practising an authoritarian rule over humans; while Western gods are full of compassion and implement an egalitarian rule.

In China, gods and humans are distinctly different. It is believed that once a human attains enlightenment and becomes a god, he leaves behind everything that made him human.

A human's luck and misfortune, birth, aging, sickness and death, wealth and marriage, are all controlled by the gods. The gods are the parents, and humans revere and honour them.

Marriages are arranged by Yue Lao (The Old Man under the Moon); he only has to tie a man and a woman together with a red thread and the couple is destined to marry. He does not concern himself with the question of whether the couple is in love.

The gods also allow the "True Son of Heaven" to rule the people and this is the the basis of legitimacy for all emperors of every successive dynasty. With the sayings "the Emperor is appointed by Heaven", and "as heaven does not change so the established way shall remain", the Chinese feudal system was able to enjoy 2 millennia of existence.

Yet in the West, although the gods also control the events on Earth, this is done with compassion and care.

What an interesting text!

1) "The Gods are the parents, and humans revered and honoured them." - Why is this suddenly in the past tense, whereas everything else is in the present?

2) "every successive dynasties" - something needs fixing here - "every" doesn't go with plural.

3) "as the heaven does not change" - no "the" with "heaven".

4) "millenia" is spelled wrong - two "n"s.

5) Should the final sentence be past tense? Maybe only the part about the emperors and the feudal dynasties should be in the past.

6) You might want to consider paragraph divisions in English.

Thanks for pointing out the inconsistency.
I had trouble thinking about "Gods" in present tense.

Well then you should make the whole thing past tense.

This looks much better now, but you've got a problem with subject/verb agreement in the final sentence now.

P.S. God should only be capitalized when it means the one God, and then it's just "God" - no "the". When talking about polytheism, it's "the gods".

Hi kafetzou, I don't understand what is "subject/verb agreement"...I'm never good at verbalising grammer rules...

You fixed it. This looks good to me now - I'm just waiting for the opinion of a couple of other Chinese speakers.

Hi Pluiepoco, Kafetzou doesn't understand what you mean by "爱屋及乌啊!". And frankly I don't know why you are using this idiom. Can you explain? Thanks.

西方自古以来的政教合一,屠戮异教,难道“人世的管理上却充满关爱和以人为本的理念”?

圣经有那么纯洁吗?圣经乃一书三衍,而致三教,相互攻伐,何谓人道?

十字东征为何?

若论罗马神,则与中国诸神何其相似!神者,仙人也,先人也。

Hi Kafetzou,
Pluiepoco has explained that his comments are on the content of the original text, and not on the translation.

He believes that the author so admires the "western gods" to the extent of belittling the chinese ones because of a love for the "western culture"; a case of "love me, love my dog".
We are also left to wonder which "western gods" is being referred to ... Greek? Roman? Norse? Celtic?

I agree with him totally. The description of the chinese gods given is mostly made up of half-truth.

Gods are not Governments, but Governments always utilized Gods to fool its people.

Chinese Gods were infact Chinese ancestors, the same as Greek Gods, who were many geat persons once lived on the Earth.

When we are talking about Western Gods, who are they? You know, all the west world has only one God, that is the God existing in Bible or Coran or some other derivatives. Then who is the God? He is the one who creates all, and controls all.

compared to Greek Gods and Chinese Gods, the Western God is indeed a God who sits supremely above all.

I don't think this is the right forum for this sort of discussion.

I agree I think there are many websites where you can start discussions about god and religions, but please not here.

Totally Agree.

But translation is not prostitution.
