| | You know, the word "esprit" is one that gets me in trouble a lot, because it is also usually used to translate the English "mind," so
avec un très bon esprit
could easily mean
with a very good mind
here.
And actually I think
full of spirit
would rather be something like
très vive
or
vivace
or even literally
pleine d'esprit
in the French?
To me, the hint that the meaning might be "mind" here is that it is a countable noun, i.e. "un esprit," which seems to me to indicate "mind." A non-countable use, i.e. de l'esprit would rather mean "fun" or "liveliness" or "spirit"?
Hmmm...What do you think, Tantine?

PS: could we not give the literal translation
...for a very long time
here? |

| | Hello
Maybe it is possible to replace " full of spirit " by " with a lot of good intentions "
and "I adore that " by " I love it "
what do you think about ? |

| | Hi/Salut Ian & Eric
Since it's "into" English, I'll stick to English!!
No problem for the "very", I'll add that.
I agree with you about the mis translation of "esprit", it always causes me some difficulties too, however "With a lot of good intentions" does not seem to convey the same idea as "avec un bon esprit" (with esprit understood as "mind" , as this would give "avec de bons intentions" so, unless Eric, you are really stuck on "with a lot of good intentions", I'm sure we can find phrase which "epouse mieux" the French one.
I agree with changing "adore" to "love", it sounds les pompous but, "I love it" would have been "je l'aime" or "je l'adore". Since the French specifically used "ça" I naturally translated in the phrase as "that".
Let me know what you think

| | Hmm...
It seems that Eric's comment indicates that he meant "thoughtful" or "kind"...?
Of course,
"with a lot of good intentions"
is not a very powerful compliment in English, but then neither is
"with a very good mind"!
The first emphasizes her kindness, and the second emphasizes her intelligence.
On the other hand,
full of spirit
seems to emphasize her vivacity.

So, which one is it:
kindness,
intelligence,
vivacity
or something else?
Eric? Can you tell us what you mean here? |

| | i do it again
I hope that we shall remain very good friends for a long time and healthy. I am absolutely sure that you are an intelligent woman who acts under the cover of good intentions, and I love that
when i spoke about "good spirit" I wanted to speak about kindness not the vivacity I am not in a hurry, I am even very slow!like you can see it
thank you |

| | Ok boys
I'll edit as per Eric's latest suggestions.
Thanks for your help

| | Tantine!
En anglais,
"acts under the cover of good intentions"
...intelligent woman who is also (very?) thoughtful (or caring? or kind?)...
Welcome ! |

| | Salut Eric,
Je dirais plutôt
...an intelligent woman who does everything with the best of intentions, and I love that.
ou encore mieux, en périphrase,
...intelligent woman who is also very kind, and I love that.

| | Bonjour Ian,Bonjour Tantine
