Garibaldi was born in 1807 in the city of Nice (Nizza), at that time the capital of the French department of Alpes-Maritimes, before it was given back to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1814; the city was definitively transferred voluntarily to France and renamed Nice only in 1859, as a reward for the aid France had given Savoy in achieving Italy's unification.
