The shift from the study of individual persons to the study of individual differences had profound effects on the history of psychology. The study of reputation - an important feature of interpersonal relationships - sank almost without trace under a rising tide of psychometric research. The case-study method, hampered by interesting but unconvincing psychoanalytic theories and procedures, suffered a similar fate.
