Le ciment dans les plaines
Coule jusqu'aux montagnes
Poison dans les fontaines,
Dans nos campagnes

De cyclones en rafales
Notre histoire prend l'eau
Reste notre idéal
"Faire les beaux"

S'acheter de l'air en barre
Remplir la balance :
Quelques pétrodollars
Contre l'existence

De l'équateur aux pôles,
Ce poids sur nos épaules
De squatters éphémères...
Maintenant c'est plus drôle

Puisqu'il faut changer les choses
Aux arbres citoyens !
Il est grand temps qu'on propose
Un monde pour demain !

Aux arbres citoyens
Quelques baffes à prendre
La veille est pour demain
Des baffes à rendre

Faire tenir debout
Une armée de roseaux
Plus personne à genoux
Fais passer le mot

C'est vrai la terre est ronde
Mais qui viendra nous dire
Qu'elle l'est pour tout le monde...
Et les autres à venir...

Plus le temps de savoir à qui la faute
De compter la chance ou les autres
Maintenant on se bat
Avec toi moi j'y crois
Primjedbe o prijevodu
- Lyrics from Yannick Noah's song "Aux Arbres Citoyens"
- I'm not necessarily looking for a word-to-word translation (particularly if the result sounds awkward), but something that would really express the environment-friendly message of the song to people speaking other languages. Don't be afraid to be creative ;)
- "Aux arbres citoyens", for instance, refers to "Aux armes citoyens", the French national anthem. You could find something that works with the anthem of the country whose language you're translating to (and we might have alternatives when that language is spoken in more than one country), or, when it's not possible, find a nice way to express the idea in that language without necessarily using the anthem theme.

Naar de bomen, burgers!

Cement over de velden
vloeit tot in de bergen
Vergif in de fonteinen
in onze landerijen

Door de cyclonen/tornado's en rukwinden
Zinkt onze historie
Ons ideaal blijft
"Vlaanderen den Leeuw! Wat Wals is, vals is!"

Lucht in zakjes kopen
De balans vullen
Enkele petrodollars
Inruilen voor het bestaan

Van de evenaar tot de polen
Dit gewicht op onze schouders
De kortstondige squatters
Het is niet grappig meer.

Aangezien we dingen moeten veranderen
Naar de bomen, burgers!
Het wordt tijd dat we
de wereld van morgen voorstellen!

Naar de bomen, burgers!
Enkele klappen zijn te incasseren
Op de uitkijk voor morgen
Enkele klappen teruggeven

Houdt stand
Een leger, dat is zoals riet
Geen knielende mensen meer
Verspreid de boodschap

Het is waar dat de Aarde rond is
Maar wie kan ons vertellen
dat het zo is voor iedereen...
en voor diegenen die nog moeten komen...

Er is geen tijd meer om te weten wie we kunnen beschuldigen
om de kansen of de anderen te tellen
Nu zouden we moeten vechten
Met jou geloof ik erin

I did most of the translation based on the English one, so it won't exactly be word-to-word ;)

the anthem-quote: I used the one we had (Flanders in Belgium) during the Guldensporenslag in 1302. I wouldn't know what else that's "national" to put there...

"Vlaanderen den Leeuw! Wat Wals is, vals is!"?? o_O

Mmm... don't want to start a community-based flaming war, here, but it sounds to me rather aggressive (not to say nationalistic) for a song whose goal is first and foremost to spur people to positive action towards our environment. I'm not quite sure about the english "strut our stuff" (I don't really know the meaning of that phrase, I must admit and, looking at the French, I realize I'm not 100% sure what the singer meant), but I'm not sure this part of the dutch translation is ideal...
Chantal, what do you think? Any suggestion?

Far from me the idea to say the whole thing is a bad translation, of course. From what I remember of my dutch classes, it looks very good It's really just that, feeling the positivity of the french song and, let's admit it, being a "wallon" myself, I can't help but frown a little at that phrase...
