Polish

Translated by pampuch721
Target language: Polish

Gdy wieje wiatr zmiany, niektórzy budują wiatrochrony, a inni budują wiatraki.
Remarks about the translation
"wiatrochrony" lub "mury" - sens i tak jest metaforyczny. <Aneta B.>

Hej Pampuch!
(Miło, że się nie poddajesz)

schroniska od wiatru --> wiatrochrony

First of all, I would like to question the logical structure of the English translation.
In my opinion every human being is inclined to do something in order to meet changes. The proverb offers two opposing possibilities. In that context it is better to replace present continuous tense by construction "to be about to". However, present continuous tense is proper in the last parts of sentence.
Thus, a better translation would be: " When the wind of change is about to blow, some are building wind shelters while others building windmills".
However, one should consider the existing translations of this proverb, for example http://rishikajain.com/2010/12/08/when-the-winds-of-change-blow/ .
Thus there are 2 possibilities for improving the translation in Polish:
Kiedy zbliża się wiatr zmian, niektórzy budują wiatrochrony, a inni budują wiatraki.

Cherimoya, we are discussing here under Polish translation, so you should type your posts in Polish or possibly in English. Sorry, I don't know French enough to discuss with you in this language.

Durklis, thank you for your vote and suggestions. I like the second part of your Polish translation "...niektórzy budują wiatrochrony, a inni budują wiatraki".
I think it's better indeed than "...niektórzy budują wiatrochrony, a w tym czasie inni budują wiatraki". Yours just sounds shorter and not so complicated. Thank you!

Anyway, you shouldn't discuss on English translation in here. There is another place for such discussion under English translation.

However, as You have noticed, we have a proverb here, so it expresses a GENERAL thought. The best tense for general thoughts is PRESENT SIMPLE.

But your idea about "to be about to" is to consider indeed.

Let's ask an opinion of an expert in Swedish, since the source is just in this language.

Pia could you consider durkis's opinion, please?

I would like to say that I wasn't sure and that's why I wrote additional translation for this: "...while others build windmills" . If that additional translation is better, it'sOK. I didn'tknow which one would be better.Sorry very much.

Aneta,

the source text is the Swedish one. I'm not an English expert, but to me it is a correct translation. If you would like to change the English translation, I guess ALL the other translations must be edited too!!

Thanks Pia. For me the translation is ok too.

Dear durklis, Pia and me can't see any problem with the English version. Moreover I think we should believe our English experts more.

Anyway, thanks for your help!

I guess if any text is strange in it's structure... it must be the Swedish one!! But, this is the way I've seen it written. I find durklis point of view intersting though.

I think the original is a quote from Mao Tse-Tung.

I could find more translations of the quote in the Internet:
"When the winds of change blow, some seek shelter, others build windmills”

"When the winds of change are blowing some people build shelters while others build windmills"

"When the winds of change are blowing, some put up shelters while others put up wind mills." (Chinese proverb)

etc.

Then probably there are more interpretations possible. Anyway, I belive we already understand the meaning. So we're not going to change anything in English version. Right?

Cherimoya, what would you do avec "wiatrochrony" ?
Don't you like the word? We can change it for example into "mury". A metaphorical meaning would be almost the same, but, frankly, I prefer "wiatrochrony", because it is closer to the original tekst and have more to do with the "wind"...

Anyway, another possible translation, I guess, is:

"Gdy wiejÄ… wichry zmian, jedni budujÄ… mury, inni budujÄ… wiatraki"

What do you think about it, my friends?

Since the English translation is fine (close to the original) I don't see why we should change it.
