"No, no of course not," said Mespa, holding on to the edge of the pitching boat, her face as white as her close-cropped hair was black.
Remarks about the translation
Selamlar
Yukarıdaki cümlede "her face as white as her close-cropped hair was black" ifadesini anlayamıyorum ve Türkçe çevirisini yapamıyorum. Mespa, romandaki zenci kadındır. İçinde bulunduğu kayıkla fırtınalı bir denizde yolculuk etmektedir. İlgilendiğiniz için teşekkürler.

I could try to translate it into Turkish, but my literary Turkish is not that good. I'll explain it to you, though - maybe that will help (you and the translator).

"her face as white as her close-cropped hair was black" is comparing only the degree to which it was white, but it wasn't really white - that's just an expression meaning she was scared because the boat was "pitching" (rocking). Here's a loose translation:

"her face showed that she was very scared"

About the comparison: If her hair was very, very black, then her face had become very, very white (she was very, very scared).

"close-cropped" means that it (her hair) had been cut very short.

Thanks a lot for the translation. I realized that i had misunderstood the sentence, so i did the translation wrong. I am not a translator but i love to read "the original text" and one of my hobbies is to try to translate my favorite English texts(novels, poems, etc) into Turkish language.
Thanks.

You're welcome - I wasn't going to do it (I was going to leave it for a native speaker to do), but after I got done explaining it to you, I decided I might as well go ahead and do it - the worst that can happen is that it gets rejected by the Turkish evaluator.

P.S. Nice hobby - you can put it to use on the cucumis site!

Why did you think I was going to stop translating on this site?
