The lack of genes for lysine and cyteine aminoacid-tRNA synthetases spurred the successful search for the corresponding enzymes that are not homologous to their common eukaryal equivalents. Surprisingly, a Bacteria-like ftsZ gene was identified, which later turned out to be characteristic for the Euryarchaeota only, as opposed to the Crenarchaeota, and which led to the idea that archaeal cell division might occur by a domain-specific mechanism.
