| Yes, the rating system is totally undermining my confidence!! I'm most comfortable with English and always thought English is my best language. But now my rating for English is 7.1
If this goes on, I'll have to resign as an English expert, cos JP said somewhere that Experts supposedly has an average rating of 7....arh!!! |
| 23 January 2007 15:37 |
| Don't forget you are rated only on the translations you did. For example, imagine that I only transalte the word "hello", I get 10/10 in a language . Nevertheless, the size of the langauge in the profile will be small, wheras, my french rating will be maybe 8 or 9 with a big font.
I didn't hceck yet, I'll keep you informed of my investigations on these matters

| Oh wow - I never noticed the font difference before. What does it mean? |

CocoTNumber of messages: 165 | I have more stars in English than I do in French even though the latest is my mother tongue... go figure :P
And yeah, I do wonder what the font difference means, too... |
| 24 January 2007 07:00 |
| The font size is reflecting the ratio of the different langauges you translated into. For example, for you CocoT, that means you have done meainly english translations, then french and a bit of dannish too. |

| I've looked to all ratings of Kafetzou. It seems there is not any bug in the system. The ratings are actually depending on the experts way of evaluating. You got generous ratings for greek. For english, you have great ratings too but you got several 7 and one 4. I guess these are mistakes, as rules for ratings were not very clear a few month ago. Now they are more clear on the expert page. I should add a warning before the rating page to recall to all expert that "The rating you give to a translation only concerns the translator's ability to write in the target language". |

| Thanks, jp. Maybe all existing experts should be reminded of that, too, as the ones who are not just becoming experts probably won't be checking the expert page.
P.S. Of course, we KNOW where my ratings for Greek came from. |

stellNumber of messages: 141 | Would you believe that my ratings in Latin are higher than in French!!! People are going to think that I speak Latin fluently. Which is far from the truth!! (of course) |

| And my ratings for Brazilian Portuguese are quite high - I don't even speak that language at all, and I know I never translated into it (I did translate from it a couple of times, though), so there's definitely a bug in the system. |

| I also don't understand why my ratings for English seem to keep going down - this is really weird. |

stellNumber of messages: 141 | my rating in French is only 7.89 although I'm a native speaker. but maybe 10/10 correspond to Victor Hugo's style!!! (in that case I'm really proud of my rating)
What about Shakespeare's style in English??? |
| 2 March 2007 15:01 |
| Well ... I don't know - Shakespeare died in 1616, and English has changed a lot since then. I don't know if he would understand something like "What's up, dude?" |

| Apple > I can answer for you.
I never give 10. My marks are going from 7 to 10 for a good translation.
If the translation is very good but short, I give maximum 8. If the translation is very good and long, I give 8 or 9.
I think only once or twice, I've given 10 for a translation.
I'm a French native speaker (I'm good at writing) and I only have 8 in this language. I do not think it's that strange... |
| 3 March 2007 02:26 |
| Interesting - I give 10 if the English is perfect, unless it's only one or two words, in which case I just accept it without a rating. I give 9 if I have to make one edit, 8 if I have to make 2-3 edits, 7 if I have to make 4-6 edits, etc.
I usually don't accept a translation if I would've had to make more than 6 edits - it just takes too long. |

appleNumber of messages: 972 | Witchy, I'm not complaining and I really don't care much about ratings and points. I like to translate and translating is a part of my job, so I just want to practice and help someone else, as far as I can.
The funny thing is that I have 9 in Catalan (for translating "I love you" ) and in Russian (for translating "No pasaran" and transliterating a name) and my English results bigger and better than my Italian. I'm not so bad in English, it was my main language (4 years) at University, but I have been speaking Italian for 52 years!! IMO, it depends partly on the single expert's evaluation "style" and partly on the fact that only the target language is evaluated.
Witchy <> one of my teachers, at school, used to say that 10 was only for Dante, 9 for Manzoni and 8 for himself. You seem to agree with him |
| 14 April 2007 01:47 |
| The rating goes to 10 but there are only 9 stars...shouldn't there be 10 stars?
|

MaskiNumber of messages: 326 | Una I'm not sure about this but if 1 is the lowest grade of acceptance, which would mean the translator did a sucky job, giving him 1 star for that would make anyone looking at his profile think that he's good enough for at least 1 star. Could be totally of mark tho Good morning all |
| 14 April 2007 07:05 |
| I had never noticed this
Actually, if you have a rating from x.00 to x.99 you get x stars. Now if you have a rating of 10 htat's right you should get 10 stars. It's a minor matter because very few average ratings are at 10. (expect your rating for english Maski )
