The Republic of Moldova has a favourable climate and fertile soil. The main part of the economy is represented by agriculture: the main Moldavian products are fruits, vegetables, wine and tobacco. After 1990, the Republic of Moldova experienced a strong economic decline, from which it has emerged only since the beginning of the century. With an income per inhabitant of $1900 per year, the Republic of Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. The Republic of Moldova imports oil, coal and natural gases, mainly from Russia.
The construction of the Oil Terminal at GiurgiuleÅŸti, which will increase Moldova's access to the international oil market and reduce its chronic energy dependency on Russia, will be finalized in May 2006.
