Santa María, llena eres de gracia
El señor está contigo
bendita tú entre las mujeres
y bendito el fruto
del vientre tuyo Jesús.
Santa María madre de Dios
ruega por nosotros
los pecadores,
ahora y en la hora
de la muerte nuestra.
Amén

Manuel, si sabés algo de inglés, podrías leer el artículo sobre el Ave Maria que tiene la Wikipedia.

Hmm... as you can see from the wiki link pirulito posted the Greek text does not translate exactly into the Latin one (and its subsequent translations) . However it IS the one we use.

I take it as granted that the requester wants the Koine Greek translation by the way

I've asked him (in Spanish) to let us know here what he wants.

No reply? I have a perfectly good modern Greek translations on my hands and I cannot reject it obviously but I can accept it either (by the way, if I have to reject it I think it is only fair to give dimitrisbirg -from my accumulated and unused points - the points this translation is worth.

Plus, I am starting to see the point about modern and ancient Greek although Greek would have to be separated to at least 3 categories: modern, Bible Greek, and Classical. Anyone wanting something in Katharevousa, Byzantine Greek or Homeric Greek (or Aeolic/Doric/Ionic dialect ) will have to specify it.

I am almost positive the request is for Bible Greek (Koine) since we are talking about the Gospels but ....

It could be used on 'popular sentences project'.

We find there 'Pater Noster'
Why not 'Ave Maria'?

I don't want Ave Maria on project, if you really want Ave Maria, you can ask to jp, and I'll not translate it.

Just an idea...
I hate prayers anyway.

But even if we put Ave Maria in the PS Project the problems remain :
a) are we talking about the Bible Greek which is still used in liturgy and is found in the Gospels or modern Greek (not likely)?

b) The Greek version (Bible Greek) does not include Jesus or the last phrase (Santa Maria etc). Should the Greek translation include those or not?

c) If they are included (I've already opened a thread asking people's opinion on my translation of the last phrase in another site already) should we put a note explaining that they are not in the original?

Well, I think you should do as you suggested above, irini. Edit the translation to the Koine version, and accept it. That way those points go automatically to dimitrisbirg.

"Sola Scriptura, par les seules Ecritures ;
Sola Gracia, par la seule Grâce de Dieu ;
Sola Fide, par la seule Foi."
Is it for that reason you don't want to include
"Ave Maria" in the "popular sentences project", Davide?

No, it's because Maria is not a saint, even if the catholicians says that and prays Maria more than God. That's inaccettable for me, if you want Ave Maria in PS project, you can ask to jp.

No, you know as I'm an agnostic, I really don't mind, I was just thinking that it is because of your religious convictions (protestantism) that you refused Virgin Mary (it's just intellectual curiosity, I don't blame you at all, and respect everyone's religious conviction!)...

I don't refuse Virgin Mary, I refuse "THE SAINT VIRGIN MARY"
I'm not protestant, "evangelic"

OK, so let's recap

I edit dimitrisbirg translation.
I copy/paste the Biblical part and add the words/phrases that aren't there.
I post a user's note explaining which part are not in the original maybe including the link pirulito posted.

Does this sound OK?

Yes - that sounds to me like the right thing to do.
