Generating panoramic images is an important step in building a virtual panoramic space system (vps). Panoramic images can reflect the image seen by a user at a certain perspective and an arbitrary angle. Panoramic images can be generated in three ways: the first is by computer, another is to take pictures directly with a panoramic camera, and the third is to generate panoramic images based on a number of discrete images. Panoramic images, varying according to projection models, can generally be divided into polyhedral panoramic images, spherical panoramic images and 360-degree panoramic cylinders.
Image seamless splicing technology is the key step in generating panoramic images. In this article, more words are dedicated to presenting its related algorithms. Seamless Image Stitching includes two techniques, image registration and image fusion. Between the two of them, image registration is the basis of image fusion. It can be said that seamless splicing technology, to a large extent, depends on the development of image registration technology. Image registration is to precisely identify the location of the overlaps of two adjacent images, and then determine the transformation relationship between the two images.
This article introduced a number of classic algorithms of feature-based image registration and region-based image registration. Image fusion is the technique in which useful information from two registered images is integrated into one image and presented by the method of visualization technology. This article introduced the image fusion algorithms of gray-scale-based images, color-space conversion and transformation domain respectively.
Finally, the article did an outlook on the future of panoramic virtual spaces and panoramic images.
