Thank you very much. |

| | Hi reigzoz,
irini suggested to add a word (εκεί) so that it would sound more natural in Greek (we added that word now). She also said that the translation is perfect but it would be nice if we could have more contect in order to understand the exact meaning of "meets" in this sentence. Is that possible? |

| | Hi user10, thank you for your kind reply.
My context in this case is for a company motto. We have guests and clients coming in to our company for services from all over the world.
So in this case, I would like to stress the meaning of people coming together as one to our property to enjoy our services.
Hope that helps. |

| | reignzoz, thank you for your reply.
Context is very important for a translation to be done correctly, and must always be mentioned.
I'll ask glavkos to adapt his translation according to your information and then I'll evaluate it.
glavko, Ï„ÏŽÏα Îχουμε το ακÏιβÎÏ‚ πλαίσιο που αναφÎÏεται η Ï€Ïόταση. Θα ήθελες να Ï€ÏοσαÏμόσεις την μετάφÏαση σου; Θα Ï€Ïότεινα: "Εδώ όπου ο κόσμος συναντιÎται και γίνεται Îνα" . Τι λÎτε; CC: glavkos irini |

| | Εντάξει. ..Δεν Îχω αντίÏÏηση. Ας το αλλάξουμε. Ότι θÎλει ο πελάτης αν και δεν είναι αυτό το αÏχικό κείμενο. |
| | 2009년 10월 28일 19:39 |
| | glavko, με συγχωÏείς αλλά δεν κατάλαβα, Îχεις αντίÏÏηση τελικά ή δεν Îχεις;
Και τι εννοείς " Ότι θÎλει ο πελάτης" ; Ποιος πελάτης; Πουλάει κανείς Ï€Ïοϊόν εδώ και δεν το ξÎÏω; ΔιαθÎτουμε όλοι χÏόνο και κόπο με μόνο αντάλλαγμα τη δική μας ευχαÏίστηση. Σκοπός είναι βγει μια όσο το δυνατόν πιστότεÏη και σωστότεÏη μετάφÏαση.
Εντός του πλαισίου που Îδωσε ο reignzoz θεωÏÏŽ ότι το " Where the world meets as one" μποÏεί να μεταφÏαστεί πιο συκεκÏιμÎνα.

| | Probably it will be easier for the discussion if I made the context much clearer than what I have explained.
The service that I was talking about is hotel meetings. We have guests from different companies holding regular meetings in our hotel. They may come from different countries all at one time. While holding the meetings, they may also check in at our hotels for the night and use our hotel facilities as well.
So in this case, I would like to convey the message of; no matter where you come from, everyone will gather in our hotel for their meeting needs.
I apologize for the inconvenience. |

| | OK let's see: If length is not a problem, the "Εδώ όπου ο κόσμος συναντιÎται και γίνεται Îνα" ("Here, where the world meets and becomes one" being a very literal translation) works just fine.
If however, it being a motto, we need something shorter? Hmmm. Tricky. I don't think we can't do better that a slightly edited form of glavkos' translation: "Εδώ όπου ο κόσμος γίνεται Îνα" (lit. "Here where the word becomes one".
Reignzoz if you don't think that any of these really works tell us so we can scratch our heads a bit more |

| | Thanks for all the help guys, appreciate it.
irini, is it better to not have the "Here"? I prefer it that way. Or is it more appropriate to have it as part of a sentence in Greek?
And the meaning of "becomes one", does it have similar meaning as "meets as one"?
If let's say I follow "Εδώ όπου ο κόσμος συναντιÎται και γίνεται Îνα", would the "meets" and "becomes one" seem to have the same meaning and become redundant? |

| | Hello reignzoz,
First of all I am going to confuse things a bit more by asking the others what they think of "Εδώ (όπου) ο κόσμος ανταμώνει ως Îνα". It could be that only I like it though
I'm afraid that the "here" part is necessary for more natural sounding Greek. We can cut out the "where" though (sort of like "Here the world meets as one" .
As for the "meet" and "become". The thing is, the equivalent of "meet" in Greek carries ONLY the meaning of coming upon someone, coming at the same place as others, that sort of thing. You know, the same as "I will meet you at the street corner" kind of thing. It cannot therefore "encompass" the meaning of "joining".
On the other hand, you could very well go with the "become" part only (glavkos' idea) since it is obvious from context that people do meet each other.
I'm afraid I'm not helping you much am I? |

| | I agree with "Εδώ (όπου) ο κόσμος ανταμώνει ως Îνα" .
Yes, is more appropriate to have "here" as part of the Greek sentence.
As irini said the equivalent of "meet" in Greek doesn't mean " to become one". |
