Taking as a point of analysis the pension benefit called imprisonment-allowance as an instrument of social protection- this article focuses on the analysis of the benefit, its meaning and effectiveness in facing the vulnerabilities of families and individuals. It is based on data whose empirical field was the Regional Jail in Pelotas. It discusses the trajectories of Social Protection as processes of struggles and achievements of social security.
