The Mont Blanc Tunnel is in the Alps between France and Italy. A Belgian truck caught fire, burned for 56 hours and reached temperatures of 1,000 celsius. It trapped the vehicles in dense and poisonous smoke. 27 people died in their vehicles. 10 people died while they were trying to escape on foot. It was over five days before the tunnel was cool enough for anyone to go in. The tunnel was badly damaged, so it was closed for three years.
