Aslında bir çocuk oyunu olan hot potato, çocukların daire şeklinde oturup bir nesneyi birbirlerine verdikleri bir oyundur. Bu nesne sıcak patatesi temsil eder ve bu nedenle eline geçen hemen elinden çıkarmalıdır. Oyunun süresi bittiğinde elinde kalan çocuk patates yüzünden yanar. İşte hot potato deyimi bu oyundan esinlenerek kullanılmaya başlamıştır.
Hot potato is actually a game for children that consists in children gathering in a circle and tossing an object to each other. This object represents a hot potato and for this reason the player who holds it should get rid of it immediately. When the time is over, the child who has the potato is out. That "Hot potato" idiom was created inspired in this game.
