Coal
In 1991-92 Britain's coal output was 91.1 million tonnes. In March 1992, there were 50 British Coal collieries in operation and 44, 000 mines (compared with 850 and 695,000 in 1955). The Government stesses that the size of coal industry should reflect the size of the market. Ten further deep-mine closures were announced in 1992. A report on the viability of 21 more is to be prepared. The Government is to make available up to $1,000 mollion to help mining communities.
