Because when I was in school in Portugal I used to make this kind of thing too, but usually it is written in a paper and you must agree and sign.

The text talks about the English subject so I think his English teacher said to translate it to sign after.

I don't know about Brazil, but in Portugal we make this before starting the "real" classes, I mean, in the first week of school.
