Could you explain me a little bit the part "aspiring as he does to 'the real truth of historical facts'," in the source text? What is the use of "as he does" here?

This is a part of a book my lecturer gave me for translation. I couldn't even understand the sentence.That is why i wrote it here.So I can't explain it

I think here it should be between commas, in order to help with the reading in English

If the sentence was written otherwise, it could have been written:

"...'great pains', as he is aspiring to 'the real truth ..."

It's a rather precious way of saying the same thing.
