In its 19th century manifestation, diplomatics was
inextricably linked to the scientific school of history. Scientific historians
aimed to analyze documents by means comparable to those
employed by the natural sciences. This analysis involved the decomposition
of a document into a series of statements that were subsequently
refined until they resembled a scientific observation.
