I found the original sonnet - it seems this request is a sort of summarised meaning of the original:
"Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove. O no, it is an ever fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wand'ring barque, Whose worth's unknown although his height be taken. Love's not time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks Within his bending sickle's compass come; Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom." | | | 22 Octobre 2009 12:39 | | | Thanks, Lein!
I do hope, too, that my translation is as correct as good | | | 22 Octobre 2009 14:22 | | | I found also the original sonnet (116). Thanks Lein.
I suggest to change "withdraws" by "becomes estranged" | | | 22 Octobre 2009 14:36 | | | The translations is great. I only want to point out that is not from a particular sonnet, but from a movie that mixed Shakespear words. (One tree hill, Episod: The show must go on). Brook said: " I'm not the most eloquent speaker, so I thought I would borrow a few words from Shakespeare. 'Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds.'(**116**) When life gets hard, when things change, true love remains the same. (**mixed**) I look at Nathan and Haley and some how I feel safer. I don't know if I can explain that, but they give me hope. And, I'm afraid say it out loud because maybe if life finds out it'll try to beat it out of them and that will be a shame. Because, we all can use a little hope sometimes, you know. That feeling that everything's going to be okay and that there's going to be someone there to help make sure of that. So, here's to Nathan and Haley, and here's to hope, and here's to a love that will not alter." | | | 22 Octobre 2009 14:40 | | LeinNombre de messages: 3389 | Thanks Jedi2000, I like your suggestion.
WlmShk - thanks for the explanation! I would not have spotted the fact that it came from a movie. I am a bit confused as to what you would like to see changed in the translation though... Could you point it out more explicitly please? Thank you! | | | 22 Octobre 2009 14:44 | | | Hello. I don't want to change anything. I have only discovered the lines where are from and placed it in here.
Shakespeare: 'Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds.'
Brooke: "When life gets hard, when things change, true love remains the same." |
