In this age of communication, formality in communication processes and technological advances give rise to a new and still little explored field: informal communication.
It is through the informal flow of information that the staff's feelings and attitudes are expressed.
The internal, informal networks of communication start when the employees' expressiveness is inhibited by the downward flow of information, and spread with the help of technology. These networks absorb important facts, especially during moments of decision making or incertitude, causing changes in behaviour and generating tensions in the working environment.
