| We are looking over the rudder | PřekladAnglicky Přeložil pias | Cílový jazyk: Anglicky
Looking over the rudder Cut off from the sea We are sailing by the mast Stretching the Sails We are heading towards the jetty
We are running aground Up on the large rocks and the sand We wade ashore What a mess Damn it, yea...
And there I found myself Endless grateful Sheltered in a makeshift house And we slept As the storm abated |

Cut off the sea
We sail by the mast
Stretch the sails
We steer towards the bridge
We sail ashore
Up on the large rocks and the sand
We wade ashore
What a mess
Fuckin’ yeah!
There I found myself
Endlessly thanking
Sheltered in a makeshift house
And we slept
As the storm died down
Pia, this is a hard translation and you've done a great work, however there are some differences in meaning for the vocabulary used in each version that we must make clear.
For example: Is it a bridge or a jetty?
sail ashore or running aground?
large rocks or big cliffs?
temporary or makeshift house?

brú - bridge
stórgrýti - large rock
siglum à land - sailing to land
neyðarhúss - I don't understand the difference between temporary and makeshift house, isn't both about a temporary accommodation?
I think I missunderstood a lot, the one Bamsa found is better. Can I use it?
| | | 11 listopad 2008 10:39 | | | Well Pia, I don't know Icelandic, you'll have to decide about the correct words to use. I don't think you misunderstood anything, but there are a few thing that in the other version sound better. Also some words sound better in yours.
The only "corrections" would be:
Some continuous tenses into simple
endless ---> endlessly
Bamsa, could you help us define the vocabulary?

In my opinion there is "jetty" and not a "bridge", "running aground" and not "sail ashore", "large rocks" because it is about the rocks on a beach over which the people have to step and, finally, I would use "makeshift house" because I believe is more appropiate than temporary.
With other words: the poetry is about a boat that comes ashore looking for shelter against the storm. They step on the land over the rocks on the beach and the walk is difficult. And than they are grateful of finding a temporary shelter in a house.
A little bit difficult to find the right translation when there are lyrics to be translated. | | | 14 listopad 2008 01:38 | | | Thank you Bamsa
Now Pia, what do you think? Will you edit anything? I don't even think we'll need a poll for it. | | | 14 listopad 2008 10:59 | | piasPočet příspěvků: 8113 | I'm a REAL beginner on Icelandic ...so I trust Ernst a lot, thank you! I'll change to "large rocks" and "makeshift house" Lilian. |
