Title
Mama when she'd ride that horse Buried out in...
Text
Submitted by marosnia
Source language: English

Mama when she'd ride that horse Buried out in Wilson fields Mama'd tell me all she thought Mama'd tell me all how riding feels

And I thought Not yet.

Then when mama got too old No one ever rode that horse Until one night I stole her key And I did ride it all night 'till dawn

When I thought Not yet.

It looks an ugly world out there Of girl-guides and disease and war I love my little velvet bed I never want to leave it anymore

Title
Mamma a cavallo
Translation
Italian

Translated by Gianni
Target language: Italian

Mamma quando cavalcava quel cavallo
Sepolto laggiù nei campi intorno a Wilson
Mamma mi diceva tutto quello che le passava per la testa
Mamma mi raccontava cosa si provava a cavalcare

Ed io pensai: Non ancora

Poi mamma diventò troppo vecchia
Nessuno cavalcò più quel cavallo
Finché una notte le rubai le chiavi
E lo cavalcai tutta notte, fino all'alba

Quando pensai: Non ancora

Là fuori il mondo è brutto
Ragazze scout, malattie e guerra
Amo il mio lettino di velluto
Non voglio lasciarlo mai più

La traduzione mi sembra più che corretta.
Il mio problema è la traduzione di "girl-guides".
La frase si riferisce a cose brutte come le "guerre e malattie". Non vedo bene cosa c'entrino le ragazze scout nel contesto.

An English speaker can tell me what does "girl guides" mean in this context?
I do not think this means "girls scout", does it?

Thanks for your help.

Girl guides are the British/Canadian version of Girl scouts. It's an organization to train girls to be able to survive in the wilderness.

In my translation I used what I believe is the literal translation in british english. In understand the slang meaning is more american, is this correct?

Knowing who's the author could help us decide.

Also I spotted a typo ("raggazze" instead of "ragazze" how do I correct it, or can someone else do this?

The slang meaning is only in sentences like the following: "I'm no girl scout, you know," meaning that I'm not naïve - I know what I'm doing (in bed).

So it's not a prostitute - it's the opposite!

Kafetzou > I agree for the meaning.
But, in this context, according to me, it doesn't have sense.
The sentence is about "an ugly world". For me "girl-guides" has another meaning.

I have searched on the Internet and found this: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530822107858628028

Someone says "girl-guides" could be another way to say "prostitute". What do you think about that Kafetzou?

I was answering your first post Kafetzou, not the second one.

Posso dire la mia, a proposito dell'ultimo messaggio di Kafetzou? In italiano, nel senso di ingenuo, si userebbe più "giovane esploratore" (o esploratrice). "Scout" mi pare non abbia questa intenzione un po' da presa in giro.
E poi, forse, scrivendo giovani esploratrici si potrebbero salvare capra e cavoli: potrebbero essere esploratrici alla ricerca di uomini!!

Thanks for the link, Witchy, but I don't think that person has a clue - she even thinks the song is sung from a man's point of view, but to me it seems crystal clear that it's a young woman.

I admit the verse doesn't make a lot of sense - maybe it refers to something that was in the news at the time when the lyrics were written. Who knows?

But it says "girl-guides", so you guys should translate it as "girl-guides", and not try to interpret it. Here's a link that explains what girl guides are:

Ok Kafetzou, so I accept the translation with "ragazze scout".

Thanks for your help.
