Juvenal's work is a precious source of information concerning the history of women in ancient Rome. Be they matrons, courtesans, slaves or travelers, they are all analysed by the critical spirit of the poet. In contrast with the heroic women of Roman history, Juvenal's contemporaries are presented as lacking in morals, unscrupulous, picky, wanting to have only short affairs and leading a bohemian life.
