The dictionary is not always correct, fuyaka. I saw the same definitions (on Zargan), but my big Redhouse has more. In this case, sacrifice is totally wrong.

As for the letter of recommendation, why would they recommend him if they didn't like him? Maybe a letter of reference is closer to the meaning here.
