I know that "assist" can be used in football/soccer terminology..hard to make sense of this phrase without some context (for me at least)

I consulted Xini when translating the Swedish phrase. The words is a bit strange and without a hint of what it deals with it is quite unclear. I wrote to the requester but haven't received any answer yet.
The Swedish translation say: "The gear (-box ) needs assistance". It could though also have been translated as 'the switch (-board) needs assistance'

It certainly could be referring to a gear in the transmission of a car....

I might say "a gear in the transmission needs to be fixed/worked on" if we go with "Cambio" as transmission gear, but i'm still not sure...

Neither was I but, I didn't hear from the requester, and I'm in doubt if you'll do it this time. Make a translation with a clear note that shows what you think and why you've translated in the way you chose to.
