I agree with Figen Kirci. My understanding of the 2 long sentences also is:
"Waiting is *as meaningless as* singing..."
"Hope is *as hard and impossible as* describing..."

The English translation does not indicate the comparison of the source text: Waiting is like singing / as if you would sing the most beautiful song in the world to someone who cannot hear, so meaningless. Hope is like describing / as if you would describe the rainbow to someone who cannot see, hard and impossible.
