Hi Oana, thx for your translation. My wife tells me it's maybe not the good meaning. What about moving the "If" at the begining of the sentence, like this : "If I knew from the begining that I would have had to use English in that situation, I would have learnt it better."

You may be right. I would transform the phrase like this: "If I knew from the beginning that I had had to use English in that situation, I would have learnt it better". I think the use of "would" in the first part of the phrase is not grammatically correct. Thank you for your suggestion.

If I knew I should use English in this situation, I would have learnt it better.

is OK.

I think a simple past sense is already understandable.

...的话 is a form of supposition.
The complete form is 如果...的话, here it uses only the latter part.

Yes, the
的话
means "if"...

and maybe we could say
If I had known earlier...
instead of
If I knew from the beginning...

and finally
...I would have studied it harder.

Anyway, another good translation!

Of course I know 如果...的话, it's basic Chinese, there was a misunderstanding there.
Have a nice day, Pluiepoco and Ian!
