Os romanos ricos tinham muitos escravos.
Mesmo Rufus era senhor de muitos escravos. Os servos de Rufus amavam-no, pois era bom (para eles). (Rufus) dava dinheiro para os escravos e não os destratava verbalmente.

I don't see inconsistencies in the Latin text; it's just a matter of "solving the puzzle" to have it make sense. A better translation into Emglish could be the following - someone else can switch it to Portuguese from here:

About masters and slaves

Rich Romans had many slaves. Rufus too was the master of many slaves. Rufus's slaves loved the master because he was good: he used to give money to keen slaves, not even did he flog them. Slaves of stern masters lived life miserably, they were frequently beated and starved out. Rarely were slaves happy with masters and masters with slaves.
