With the term datum (plur. data) we define every form of information that has significance either individually or especially in relation with other pieces of information with which it presents itself, e.g. a telephone number. They represent the raw material to produce information. Data are represented with symbols that don't constitute information if they are taken individually. They acquire meaning, if they are interpreted in a way that's useful to people. For instance, a telephone number doesn't have much meaning taken individually, unless it's linked to a proper name.
