| | Hi Pia, I guess the original vocabulary is also archaic, but in current English, how would you put this?
"To eat and drink at thy word
Thou God to honor, us to be gifted"

Hm, maybe:
To eat and drink according to (his) your word
To God the honor, us the gain
?

| | So, I guess we can say it this way:
"In Jesus's name we go to the table
To eat and drink at thy word
to God the honor, to us the gift
May we receive this food in Jesus's name"
What do you think?
before edits:
In Jesus name we go to table
To eat and drink at thy word
Thou God to honor, us to be gifted
So receive our food in Jesus name |

| | I liked that. You can use it if you wish. |

| | I know that this question was posed several years ago, nonetheless I'd like to chime in and offer how my family was taught the prayer by my paternal grandmother, whose family came to the US in the early 1900's. When we would say the blessing before a meal, we would often go right on to the English version (especially if we had guests who had no clue what we were saying!). It may not be as exact a translation as the others above, but it scans better rhythmically, I think, and is easier to say as a group blessing as a result. Also, I know Norwegian is not a unified language, so this is an alternate spelling to what I've seen posted here:
"I Jesu Navn går vi til Bord,
At spise, drikke på dit Ord,
Dig, Gud, til Ære, os til Gavn,
så får vi Mad i Jesu Navn, Amen!"
“In Jesus Name, we sit to the table,
to eat and drink according to his Word.
Now God we honour, us to bless
As we partake, in Jesus Name, Amen!â€
Also, I've found on YouTube recently many Norwegians who sing this to the Doxology tune 'Old 100th,' which strikes me as a wonderful way to enjoy and celebrate a meal.
Cheers, hope this helps any who are seeking info on this wonderful blessing. |

| | agree with Ernst.
we have NO Norvegian expert
so why not in Danish CC: lilian canale |

| | The Norvegian source text is as follows :
I Jesu navn går vi til bords
At spise og drikke pa ditt ord
Dig Gud til ære, oss til gavn
Sa far vi mat i Jesu navn
I'm 99 % sure about that.
I can edit it as I'm a Norvegian assistant expert
if you all agree.
sorry for what I said before but I think it might be the easiest way.
what do you all think ? CC: lilian canale |
