Several lines or inflections of the chorale-like pieces composed by Mendelssohn show great similarity to traditional chorales and, as such, underscore the label as chorale-like. The examples of the previous chapter have indeed shown that, at least for him, the echoes are not the primary characteristic to be evaluated. Because of this, Wolfgang Dinglinger can only be partially agreed with when he writes,
"It is indicative that Mendelssohn's own choral adaptions often display to some extent a common denominator of known choral melodies and inflections. With these, they represent the general and have a high recognizability even though, or exactly because, they are not specialized Chorales but rather their substrate.
