The factories also underwent a change and became larger and larger as time passed. In the beginning the factory owner lived close to his factory and workers, over which he ruled like a second father to them and their families. During the 19th century the original factory villages developed into larger cities, where the factory employées lived tightly packed together in miserable built houses, the socalled 'back to backs'. The factory owners however lived in style in their big mansions far from the workers misery.
