| The district of Montmartre | | Cílový jazyk: Anglicky
The district of Montmartre is certainly one of the most picturesque areas of Paris.
The majority of streets are still cobbled, transporting you right back to the beginning of the 20th century.
We found, by chance, the brasserie where the film Amélie was shot, that was worth a visit; the food is good and the staff, pleasant.
I would also suggest visiting Père-Lachaise cemetry, which is worth the trip. | | Amélie Poulain - this film is simply known as Amélie in English |

"We found, by chance, the brasserie where the film Amélie was shot, which was worth a visit; the food was great and the staff were pleasant."
The original says :
Nous avons trouvé par hasard la "brasserie" où a été tourné le film "Amélie Poulain", cela vaut le détour car on y mange bien et le personnel est sympatique. ("We found, by chance, the brasserie where the film Amélie was shot, it was worth a visit because the food was great and the staff were pleasant." ) | | | 6 září 2012 12:10 | | | In this same second sentence, I would write:
"the food is great, and the staff is pleasant."
["...on y mange bien et le personnel est..."] Surely, one can still eat well there, and the staff continues to be pleasant...
Just my opinion. | | | 6 září 2012 12:14
Moreover:
"on y mange bien" means that the food is good...
"Great" is quite another level of quality, isn't it? | | | 6 září 2012 12:49 | | | Francky; I would have said the "because" was implied in this case, but yes for word-for-word accuracy it could be added.
Lev, agreed on your points, except you can't say "the staff is" in English because this word is plural. We could put "the staff are" in this case. | | | 6 září 2012 13:01
Maybe you are right, arbctb...
Excuse me the doubt, but that's a difficult word if you think of a body or group of people, which would be singular...
| | | 6 září 2012 13:11 | | | Definitely, it's one of those exceptions. Like the word "sheep"...
Thank you for your feedback though; it is useful. | | | 6 září 2012 13:29 | | | OK. I take your point if you know better
Thanks ! |
