Hi cheesecake,
The verb tenses do not sound fine. What does this mean?

Hi Lilian, instead, can we say "They would have already gone before you go"? It means that until you go there, they are already gone for a long time, but the sentence is in past tense.

Let me see if I understand...

"When you arrived/got there, they had (already) gone a long time" (past action)

or

"Before you arrive/get there, they will have (already) gone a long time" (future action)

The first version of the sentence that you wrote seems correct with the original text , but I have realized something wrong with the structure of the Turkish sentence.

Handy, could you please help me here, do you think the text should be arranged? Because "olacaklardı" stands for a past action even though it seems like the meaning tells about a future action. It seems a bit complicated

Cheesecake, yes, this one seems a little bit complicated. But nothing is wrong with the text. well, at least I cannot see any mistake.

Anyway, "When/By the time you arrived there, they had already gone a long time." is a correct translation -as you already said above!

Btw, it may be a stupid question but please could one of you tell me why we used "a long time" here? Shouldn't it be "a long time ago"? I am really confused.

'A long time ago' is used with simple past and it means: long before now.
'A long time' means: much time (at anytime)
