Hi Lilian, instead, can we say "They would have already gone before you go"? It means that until you go there, they are already gone for a long time, but the sentence is in past tense.

"When you arrived/got there, they had (already) gone a long time" (past action)

or

"Before you arrive/get there, they will have (already) gone a long time" (future action)

The first version of the sentence that you wrote seems correct with the original text , but I have realized something wrong with the structure of the Turkish sentence.

Handy, could you please help me here, do you think the text should be arranged? Because "olacaklardı" stands for a past action even though it seems like the meaning tells about a future action. It seems a bit complicated

Cheesecake, yes, this one seems a little bit complicated. But nothing is wrong with the text. well, at least I cannot see any mistake.

Anyway, "When/By the time you arrived there, they had already gone a long time." is a correct translation -as you already said above!

Btw, it may be a stupid question but please could one of you tell me why we used "a long time" here? Shouldn't it be "a long time ago"? I am really confused.

'A long time ago' is used with simple past and it means: long before now.
'A long time' means: much time (at anytime)
