I think the best way to express a "hope" that something will happen would be:
"God willing, I will die young" | | | 10 Tháng 7 2008 11:29 | | piasTổng số bài gửi: 8114 | Oh, thanks for telling! I'll edit and then I'll give you the points, because ..that is very different from my "try". | | | 10 Tháng 7 2008 12:50 | | | hI pIAS . It's not a hope. "If God wants it, I'll die young"". I think it's just a statement of the power of God.
"Om Gud vil" = If God wants". | | | 10 Tháng 7 2008 12:58 | | piasTổng số bài gửi: 8114 | Hello gamine
Hm ...that is what I wrote first "If god wants, I will die young". Yes, you are right, it is a statement!
Does that change anything Lilian? | | | 10 Tháng 7 2008 14:39 | | | Hi gamine,
The present participle in English is used in a number of situations. One of them is what is called "ellipsis" and consists in switching a phrase by the participle in conditional sentences of the first type (present-future combination)
For example, instead of saying:
"If I have time, I'll visit you tomorrow."
we say:
"Having time, I'll visit you tomorrow"
The same here, being a hope or not, the most common way to express that sentence (or statement as you say) is:
"God willing, I'll die young"
I hope I was clear enough.
