The imposing ramparts of the Castle stand on top of a hill. The original structure dates back to the late Roman period but was destroyed by the Huns in 452 AD. It was rebuilt in the Middle Ages under the Marquis of Monferrato and the Gonzagas and later under the Savoys in the 1600's. Today it hosts the Judicial Prison and Municipal Archaeological Museum, one of the most important in the Piedmont. In the broad park there is a botanical garden and an oasis, natural refuge of birds, amphibians and small mammals.
