Ujumbe wa hivi karibuni | | | | | 27 Februari 2009 03:49 | | jonerIdadi ya ujumbe: 135 | This is a biblical passage, John 14.12. Better stick to an official translation, like the "New International Version" that can be found here:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%2014;&version=31; | | | 27 Februari 2009 10:25 | | | I would translate it as follows: "Anyone who believes in me will also do the works I do and even greater works" | | | 27 Februari 2009 11:00 | | | Hi Lilian! Why did you reject my translation? My translation was: "He who believes in me will also do the works that I do, and he will do the greater ones." Your translation, as I can see, is not much better except for the first word. Many English proverbs begin with a pronoun "he", so I did use it. What's wrong in that? | | | 27 Februari 2009 12:33 | | | Hi guys, we have a problem here
This is, indeed, a line from the Bible, however the original presented is not using the exact words of the Bible. That makes the end of the line have a different meaning and translation.
In John 14 we read:
"... He will do even greater things than these, ..."
That would render into Portuguese:
"...fará coisas ainda maiores do que estas,..."
As we can see the request says something a bit different instead:
" e as fará maiores" what renders exactly what I wrote:
"and he will do them even greater."
Sometimes we have to stick to the original because we don't know why the line (even being a well known one) was changed. Some words in a sayings may be changed by the proposer to give another meaning. Perhaps it's not the case here, but in any case...
Anyway we can place that comment in the remarks. What do you think? CC: joner Maybe:-) sagittarius | | | 27 Februari 2009 12:57 | | | Lilian, did you pay attention that this translation request was of "meaning only"? | | | 27 Februari 2009 13:57 | | | What do you think "Meaning only" means sagittarius?
Please, when you post under a translation check the box: "Notify me when a reply is posted" under the message field so that you'll receive the replay and who posts it will not have to cc you every time. CC: sagittarius | | | 27 Februari 2009 17:08 | | jonerIdadi ya ujumbe: 135 | The request comes from a brazillian, so "meaning only" has "no meaning" to me. If he wants to communicate this biblical excerpt, the best way is to stick to a traditional translation, even if some words of the original don't match a specific Bible version (there are plenty of them, who knows which one he's using?).
But if you stick to the Cucumis meaning of "Meaning only", then the first original translation provided by sagitarius is good as lilian's.
