(une petite partie d'une chanson de Jacques Brel)
----------------------------------------------
Olá gostaria de saber a tradução desta estrofe da música de Jacques Brel, "Au Suivant". Venho a tempos tentando entender essa parte, mas não consegui uma tradução confiável.

I would like to know the translation to these verses Jacques Brel's "Au Suivant" song. I've been trying to understand them for a time now, but a can't find a good translation.

Francky,

I tried to do this, but there seems to be serious idioms here.

"Au suivant au suivant" -> "to the following to the following"?

"adjudant de mes fesses" -> "??" (maybe dirty words...)

Better translate "au suivant" by "next!"
"adjudant" is a grade in the army

"de mes fesses" is idiomatic, would be literaly translated by "from my asscheeks", but I never heard that in English (maybe I'ven't been staying long enough in England ? lol!)

This Jacques Brel's song is quite hard to translate as it uses some kind of idiomatic slang..

Well, maybe Tantine could help more than I ?, as she's perfectly bilinguist (and she's back since a couple of days)

Is it something related to "ajudante de merda"?

Yeah, could be transposed this wway, as I don't think there's an English expression that would say "from my asscheeks"...

Thanks, Francky! In fact, I was only trying to translate it into Brazilian Portuguese, not into English (yet).

Goncy,

"au suivant, au suivant" is how the new recruits would be called in a file when beginning their service into the army: "next one!"

"adjudant de mes fesses" is a depreciatory way of talking about this officer.

Let's see what Francky thinks, if you decide to give up this one let me know, I think understand all the idioms in it but I don't want to steal it from you.

Edit: tu dégaines vite, Francky!

"next!" (I think I could hear that in some movie or some cartoon)This is why I didn't say "next one", but maybe it is more correct (some native English speaker could confirm)
Jacques Brel translated into English? Why not, David Bowie already sang "in the port of Amsterdam"... Although I think it must be very difficult to express exactly meaning from his songs into any foreign language...
But have a try, as we (francophones, and more particularly French) say "ça ne mange pas de pain!" (lol)

"adjudant de mes fesses" não seria algo como:
puxa-saco???

ass-licker para o inglês

No lilian, I don't think so...rather would mean "the adjudant, this asshole"...
here are the lyrics from "Au suivant" :

Entre mes bras trop maigres semble me murmurer
Au suivant au suivant

Tous les suivants du monde devraient se donner la main
Voilà ce que la nuit je crie dans mon délire
Au suivant au suivant
Et quand je ne délire pas j'en arrive à me dire
Qu'il est plus humiliant d'être suivi que suivant
Au suivant au suivant
Un jour je me ferai cul-de-jatte ou bonne sœur ou pendu
Enfin un de ces machins où je ne serai jamais plus
Le suivant le suivant

Here's some Youtube from the song, where one can see also subtitles in Dutch (Jacques Brel was a Belgian artist) :

I took a look at the Youtube video with the Dutch subtitles, and "cet adjudant de mes fesses" is translated by "die rotsergeant die halve nicht", or "that crapsergeant, half queer". Well, at least the message is clear ^^

I hadn't seen Brel in action yet though , knew he was Belgian, but appearantly not my generation :P

Hi all

Glad to be back here

"Au suivant", would be "Next (please)" maybe here it would be good to put "Next in line, next in line"?

As for the "adjuant de mes fesses" - Sorry lilian but "ass licker" is much much to vulgar to fit here.

"adjudant" is translated by "warrant officer" (in Br English).

Maybe the use of the word "ruddy" as the adjective for this warrant officer could work? The word 'ruddy' in english is an euphemism for "bloody", "f...ing" and quite a few other swearwords it would allow us to insult this "adjudant de mes fesses" without being too vulgar.

The French original is not vulgar at all, normally instead of saying "de mes fesses" in French we say "de mes couilles" (smallish round masculin sexual attributes ).

Bises
Tantine

Maybe my associations are misleading here, but doesn't "au suivant" have a double meaning here in the sense of "Next" (in line) / "to the follower" (as in ode to the soldier who follows blindly)?
