Tom is an orphan who lives with his Aunt, in a small town on the shores of the Mississippi in the United States. The fact that he is an orphan hasn't turned him into a "poor thing"-- quite the opposite. Tom is a boy who loves adventure, mischief, and tricks (which Tom is very successful at playing). Tom's adventures are suspense-filled and entertaining, and he dares to do the things that other children would like to do. However, Tom not only loves adventure, he also knows how to be a loyal friend, as well as how to win the heart of a girl named Becky.
