OK, first off, I am not sure about "hold fast". Anything that really means "Hang in there", "don't give up" can go there.
Secondly I am not sure about "galvanized". I am not sure if he had made everyone excited or had just caused a lot of fuss for his family.
The overall meaning, if I get it right, is that he was cut off from going anyway in place X. The reason was the strike of the Greek farmers (as evident by that sort of slogan in capitals). Something was to happen and he got his family excited about it or, as I said, caused them some inconvinience or something. Obviously this something didn't happe because of the strike.
The rest seem (to me) self-explaining.
