What is the original language you translated from?
The english translation seems a bit strange to me.
The context is unclear, which makes it very hard to understand the sentence after the comma.

In this case I should think it should be "have burned" instead of "burned". The meaning of the whole proverb becomes more clear (and translating it to Frisian becomes easier).
I'm absolutely sure that Lili got the meaning of this translation perfectly and I'm counting on her about the appropriate tense in English... Besides it's not Russian - it's Bulgarian.
