Lilian,

What is the original language you translated from?
The english translation seems a bit strange to me.
The context is unclear, which makes it very hard to understand the sentence after the comma.

It's a proverb and it's got no context. THE ASHES are greater than soil because THEY burned/have burned (unlike soil...).

Hi Lilian,

Thanks for your reply.
In this case I should think it should be "have burned" instead of "burned". The meaning of the whole proverb becomes more clear (and translating it to Frisian becomes easier).

HI Via, Hi jollyo,

Do you think editing it to "they've burned" would solve the issue?

It's all the same to me since it is quite an old translation. If you consider it necessary - do it.

I should think so.
I will use the latter as the version to translate in Frisian...

ViaLuminosa,
There one other thing that I cannot understand nor translate, because I do not read any Russian

Have the ashes
1 - burned
2 - been burned
3 - been burning
?

It really makes a difference, before I translate it any further!

This question should be directed to the English expert actually. What would you say about this, Lili?

I'm sorry, but this is a question for somebody who speaks/reads Russian...!

I'm absolutely sure that Lili got the meaning of this translation perfectly and I'm counting on her about the appropriate tense in English... Besides it's not Russian - it's Bulgarian.
