désolé não é um termo extensamente usado por isso o traduzi literalmente.

Penso que a intenção da frase é ressaltar o significado de desolado como algo mais forte do que simplesmente ter muita pena ou sentir muito, que são as expressões cotidianas.

"Je suis désolé" é o termo mais comum para pedir desculpas em francês. Não é nada forte, é "quotidien".
