Hi mingtr,

What do you mean by "akin to you"?

Could it be: "like you did" (she also marked out an island?)

Hi!
Well, "akin to you", means :like you, identical to you..
Well..it's a poem..
The meaning is that in Paradise, he found a place that looks like his love and he marked that place.
He also found a house by the sea.
It's only two lines for a whole poem!
"In Paradise I have marked an island...
akin to you, and a house by the sea
with a big bed and a small door
I've cast an echo into the bottomless deeps
To see myself every morning when I wake up
to look at you getting half in the water
and half to mourn you in Paradise.."
I sent you a little bit more!

I think "akin to you" or "indetical to you".
The word in greek is απαράλλαχτο" not "όμοιο".
word by word translation is :Indetical to you..

"όμοιο" also means "identical", "exactly the same". Don't confuse it with "παρόμοιο", that means "similar".

More or less we are saying that, when translating poetry, it is very difficult to choose the most appropriate word, since the translator cannot be certain about exactly what the poet had in mind when writting the poem. So we agreed that there is not right or wrong when translating poetry (if the essence of the poem comes through).

This is an extract of Odysseas Elytis's poem ''The Monogram'' and mingtr's translation ''In Paradise I have marked an island,
akin to you, and a house by the sea'' is an ''official'' english translation.
So i guess it is the right one!
